Introducing Clare FitzGerald…
Hi, I’m Clare! Firstly I have to admit that I haven’t always wanted to be a photographer and as a child I didn’t walk around with a camera in my hand all the time. I actually wanted to work with Dolphins and Whales! However, I did enjoy being creative with pencil and paint, it was whilst at University that I truly developed my passion for taking photos. I grew up in South Africa and studied a Bachelor of Fine-Art Degree, majoring in Photography, at Rhodes University; taught & inspired by the very quirky photographer Obie Oberholzer. I loved working with film at the time, in particular the process of developing an image and seeing the final outcome. Since then I’ve moved from the dark side, to the digital side, something I thought I would never do; although I will never lose the romance of working with film!
In 2004 I moved from South Africa and lived in London for several years, working in a creative role as a Project Manager installing themed sets within visitor attractions such as Madame Tussauds. In my free time I began photographing weddings and events.
I now have the pleasure of working for myself and have been taking photos full time since 2009. Photographing weddings, events, lifestyle & commercial projects throughout Sussex, Surrey, Kent & London. Enjoying life on the ‘Sunshine Coast’ of East Sussex, in Hailsham near to Eastbourne & Brighton; with my Husband Marcus, our 2 beautiful children Molly Rose, Madison Hector and our cheeky chocolate Labrador, Kuba. Marcus proposed to me in the Grand Canyon, I said yes and we got married in the magical surroundings of the Kruger National Park in South Africa. He also assists me behind the scenes and as a 2nd photographer when required.
When I’m not taking photos I enjoy baking a cake or two, bargain hunting, being ‘crafty’ with fabric & furniture. Two of my favorite films are Grease & Dirty Dancing, also enjoy a good horror. I’m happy listening to Fleetwood Mac & Carly Simon all day, partial to a G&T now and again!
Random quirky facts… whilst working at the Proud Galleries I served Paul McCartney a glass of wine at a party and asked him for his autograph, he said no; thanks Sir Paul! I’ve also escorted Alvin and The Chipmunks on a flight from London to Las Vegas. I’ve been an extra in Eastenders whilst an episode was being filmed at Madame Tussauds. Chatted with Robert Plant for 10 minutes at an auction, although at the time I didn’t realise who he was!
